Praise following SH2 crash

Police are praising drivers for the tolerance they showed when they were delayed during a crash on State Highway 2.

Emergency services were called to a truck crash, just north of the Kotemaori settlement near Wairoa, on Friday morning.

A truck and trailer unit had overturned on a tight bend, blocking the highway.

It was transporting sheep offal, which was tipped onto the road surface.

'Many motorists had urgent appointments and travel connections which they missed, so we really appreciated their understanding,” says Senior Sergeant Tony Bates.

A heavy haulage truck and a 100-tonne crane were brought up from Napier to right the truck and trailer unit and clear the road.

During this operation, there were significant delays for other motorists.

'Roading contractors then had to clean the offal, blood, diesel and oil from the road.

There was no detour available and so SH2 was closed from 7am until 12pm, when one lane was cleared sufficiently to allow traffic through.

'Police acknowledge the inconvenience caused and would like to thank the delayed motorists for their patience and understanding whilst the crash was attended to and cleared.”

Was there no way passed this crash from 7am until noon ? No possibility of going around the truck on either side of the road or through a paddock ? Could a local farmer have bladed the offal off the road while they were waiting for the 100t crane ? The road didn't need to be closed to preserve evidence as in the case of a fatality. Does the policeman understand the cost to the nation of closing the road? It may well be more than the crashed truck is now worth. Perhaps there just isn't much traffic on SH2 at Kotemaori, but that makes a diversion somewhat easier. Or have these patient travellers been the victims of procedural arse covering ?

here we go again

Agree with By mutley, the power happy policeman does not care, it looks like there is room on the right to get past,it looks like traffic has been through there, what is there to preserve, just offal, for goodness sake its common sence is it not to keep traffic flowing, this happened near Belk road not long ago,and turned all traffic back ( towards Kaimais and use the next side road, had the Fire engine moved forward to let the cars through to TGA,would have been better,a fully loaded truck and trailer loaded with sheep to turn back ,the truck driver was angry,as it was a hot day STRESSFUL FOR THE SHEEP with full wool,my gosh all this POWER to close a road,(come on) use common scense,Thankyou Sunlive for this NEWS,Phew, 10-4 out.

Road closed

It appears old trucker from the tone of your comments that you are assuming this event is near Tauranga but it is the Wairoa in the Hawkes Bay!!
