Whakatane United laid down the challenge to the other Western Bay Plenty Reserve Grade championship contenders on Saturday, when they beat pool two top seeds Greerton.

Greerton had first use of the batting strip at Rex Morepeth Park in Whakatane and were bowled out for 157.

Sam Brown was the best of the visitors batting attack reaching 64 before being dismissed, with Vishal Mani posting 26 runs.

Whakatane skipper Alex Yates led the way for his sides hard fought three wicket win, with 44 runs. Ryan Simonsen and Pip Thickpenny both reached the thirties, as their team joined defending title holders Te Puke at the top of the pool two standings.

Geyser City defeated former Western Bay Reserve Grade heavyweights Katikati at Fergusson Park in pool one action. The Western Bay side was rolled for 132, with Sean Ingram taking four wickets for 28 runs. The Rotorua visitors had to work hard for their four wicket win, before 14 year-old Bradley Rumble smashed a six to take out the encounter.

WBOPCA First Round winners Lake Taupo CC were given a fright in their home town matchup with Sikh Sports. The Western Bay Indian representatives posted 158, with Taupo bowler Nick Field in top form taking five wickets at a cost of 35 runs. However the home side had to dig deep to eke out a narrow two wicket victory.

Defending Western Bay of Plenty Reserve Grade champions Te Puke have made the perfect start to their title defence, with a six wicket win against long-time rivals Mount Maunganui in round two on Saturday.

Mount Maunganui batted first at the Te Puke Domain and were removed for 189, with Nathan Byrnes leading the way with a gritty 90 runs. Supreet Singh was in superb form with the ball taking five wickets for 36 runs. The Te Puke victory was anchored by Vaughan Wilson, who belted an unbeaten 70, with Denym Clarke chipping in with a handy 34 runs.

Tauranga Boys' College posted 203/8 and then bowled R&A Sangha out for 155, to move to the top of the pool one standings with Lake Taupo CC. Cadets posted a solid won over Aquinas College. Cadets batsmen Ben McCalgan and Ben McDonald reached the seventies with Aquinas Andrew Randrup top scoring with 72 runs.

A rollicking century from Bethlehem College's Joe Silcock, led his school to their first win in the B Grade competition, in their encounter against Mount Maunganui. The Bethlehem students batted first post 255/5, with Silcock hammering 129. His three figure score came off a neat 100 balls and included 18 fours. Five wickets from Cameron Murray saw the Mount team bowled out for 121, to give Bethlehem College a big win.

The Singh XI bounced back from last weekends horror start to their B Grade championship title defence, with a solid win over Grasshoppers at Gordon Spratt Reserve. The Te Puke side batted first and posted the Hoppers a target of 189 to win. Amrit Singh and Lovely Singh both reached the forties with JS Dhillon contributing 36 runs.

Led by a three wicket bag from Deepa Singh, the Te Puke region bowlers grabbed the ascendancy to remove Grasshoppers for 114, to claim a solid 74 run win.

Tauranga Boys' College third eleven defeated Albion, with Wanderers winning two on the trot with a win over Mount Maunganui College.
