Power cut as strong winds lash Bay

Strong winds ripped through the region as a storm caused havoc around the North Island.

About 740 properties in Te Puke lost power on the weekend as strong winds ripped through the region.

Power was cut to homes in Te Puke, Maketu and Pongakawa on Sunday, but the Bay of Plenty escaped most of the bad weather that damaged other areas of Powerco's electricity network.

Powerco service delivery manager Dave Hammond says about 740 Te Puke customers lost power at 7.10am but were reconnected by 8.25am, while 169 residents in Maketu lost power from 7.40am for about two hours.

'In Pongakawa about 20 residents were without supply from 8am until it was restored at 12.50pm.

'Taranaki was the worst hit with 5300 customers without power at the height of the storm. Whanganui and Manawatu also lost supply at various times.”

Crews are in clean up mode this morning clearing up pockets of outages.
