Three outboard motors, fuel tanks and two cox communication boxes have been stolen from the BOP Coast Rowers shed on Wairoa Road over the weekend.

Club members returned a day early from the cancelled Blue Lake Regatta to discover the clubrooms broken into for the second time in a week.

'The motors are used by coaches on the safety boats to ensure our rowers are safe on the water,” says club member Carolyn Crawford-Smith.

'All our coaches are volunteers and the club relies on fundraising to buy this equipment so we can provide our youth and community with the opportunity to row.

'We need urgently replace these motors as we have in the middle of our competitive season. We have now had to spend funds, that could have used for new life jackets and boats, on increasing security.”

A cox communication box is worth approx $2000 and is used by the coxswain to communicate with rowers during a race. They are no use to anyone not rowing, says Caroline. The out board motors are valued at $3500.00. And are a Daihatsu, a Mercury and Johnson – all 15 horsepower. Two of them are good but the Johnson is maintained with scavenged parts.

And while the club is insured it now has two insurance excesses to pay.

'We have set up a "Givealittle" page under Bay Coast Rowing, if anyone would like to help,” says Caroline.
