It's an exciting top level curtain-raiser to a busy schedule of women's cricket in the Bay of Plenty over the next couple of months.

The latest rounds of the Northern Provincial League takes place at the Bay Oval this Sunday and will feature four teams going head-to-head – Galaxy versus Sonic, and Velocity versus Power.

The NPL is a new concept aimed at revitalizing the game and growing the number of women engaging and playing cricket. It also exposes Bay players to a quality competition to develop their game.

There are four non-regional teams featuring several White Ferns and the country's best emerging players in games played across six weekends. A draft was introduced to ensure the talent was evenly spread across the four teams.

There's plenty of local interest in Sunday's two NPL games with Western Bay players Sam Curtis, Kate Anderson, Nensi Patel and Briana Perry all playing.

White Fern Anna Peterson who learnt the game while living here will also be in action as will be one of the games big guns and another White fern Sara McGlashan who'll turn out for the Power.

Entering the fourth round of the NPL, the Power is unbeaten record with three straight victories from Sonic and Velocity with Galaxy tailing the field.

The latest round of the NPL at the Bay Oval leads into the White Ferns playing Australia in early March which will feature some of the best women players in the world.

There's also a grassroots initiative such as the local Junior NPL starting early March and the GoGirl introduction program kicking off in the first term of school. And the Rainbow Cup Festival Day at the Bay Oval on the March 15.

Sunday's NPL games at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui start at 12pm.
