Two teenage paddlers have been rescued from the Tauranga harbour after they were tipped out of their kayaks.

A police spokesperson says they were notified of the incident which occurred just off the coastline near Kulim Park in Otumoetai at about 3pm.

'Both were wearing life jackets but were needing to be rescued as they drifted.”

A reporter at the scene says a police vessel plucked the two kayakers from the water.

The police spokesperson adds Coastguard and the Tauranga Harbour Master were also involved in the rescue, while the TECT Rescue Helicopter was put on standby in case it was required.

Never remove your life jacket, and always stay with the boat.

The two brothers who were visiting from Hamilton, got into difficulty while kayaking off Kulim Park. Police and Tauranga Coast Guard alerted vessels in the area to provide assistance. The boys were located about 800 metres upwind from their kayaks, which had drifted downwind to Sulpher Point. It appeared the older brother had gone to the others assistance, removing his life jacket, to swim to him. After drifting in the water for about 30 minutes, they were cold and exhausted, before being rescued by the Harbour Patrol vessel, Moko, and returned to their grandmother at Kulim Park.
