Hewletts Rd reopened after petrol spill

UPDATED 4:40PM: The petrol spill caused by a three-vehicle crash on Hewletts Road in Mount Maunganui near the harbour bridge has now been cleared.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the road has been fully reopened and would like to thank motorists for their patience.

Approximately 100 litres of fuel was spilled on the road as a result of the three vehicle crash involving two trucks and a car which occurred shortly after 3pm.

The occupants of the car received minor injuries and were dealt with by emergency services at the scene.

Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash

EARLIER 4PM:

Fire crews have contained a petrol spill caused by a three-vehicle crash on Hewletts Road near the Tauranga Harbour Bridge.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Dallas Ramsay says two appliances were dispatched to the crash to contain 100 litres of fuel which was spilt on the road shortly before 3.15pm.

'We originally received notification of a two car crash involving a car and a truck at 3.15pm.

'Approximately 100 litres of fuel which was spilt. We have contained that fuel and we're awaiting on the New Zealand Transport Agency to attend to assist with the mop up.”

Dallas says appliances from the Tauranga and Mount Maunganui stations were dispatched to the crash.

The occupants of the car received minor injuries and were treated at the scene by emergency services.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says Hewletts Road near the bridge heading to Tauranga is currently down to one lane.

'There are significant delays for motorists so please avoid the area if possible."

There will be long delays for commuters as the spill will take time to clean up and Ian recommends motorists travelling to Tauranga from Mount Maunganui take the Old Harbour Bridge on State Highway 29.

It was originally reported the crash involved two vehicles, but Ian says three vehicles were involved - logging truck, light truck, and a car. It's believed the fuel came from the light truck.

Ambulance staff were also dispatched to the scene.

Police are currently responding to a petrol spill caused by a two vehicle crash on Hewletts Road near the Tauranga Harbour Bridge.

A reporter at the scene says one of the two Taranga-bound lanes of Hewletts Road is blocked just before the bridge as a result of the crash. involving a fuel tanker and car.

'The car was quite smashed and ended up facing the wrong directions. Traffic is quite bad and appears to be getting worse, it's basically causing a bottleneck.”

At this stage it is unknown if there were any injuries as a result of the crash.

if the speed limit on hewletts road was reduced and signs to state speed put up, the road is very busy and there is alot of stopping and starting because of the traffic lights and businesses.
