Another hot Tauranga day predicted

Today the weather forecast is for a fine day with high clouds increasing and northerlies.

There's a predicted high of 27 and an overnight low of 17 degrees.

Meanwhile, downpours have started, with winds up to 160kmh on the way for central and lower New Zealand as a rapidly deepening low charges out of the Tasman Sea at the lower South Island.

"We've had some heavy rain in Westland overnight but we're expecting it to get a lot worse later on today," MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassey said around 5am today.

Between midnight and 5am 35mm of rain had fallen at Arthur's Pass, although in Hokitika there was only around 10mm. "The worst is still to come."
