Police investigating the fatal crash which saw a ute smash through the bedroom of an Otumoetai home this morning, are appealing for witnesses.

Sylvia Lawrence was sound asleep when a ute came crashing through her bedroom around 1am.

The force of the crash sent Sylvia and her bed hurtling toward her dresser on the other side of the room

The driver of the ute died at the scene and the ute's passenger, a 17-year-old, was taken to Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
