One person has died following a crash in Tauranga overnight.

In the early hours of this morning a car has crashed into a house on Otumoetai Road.

The driver has died while a passenger received moderate injuries and was taken to Tauranga Hospital.

The owners of the home that was crashed into were uninjured.

The Police Serious Crash Unit are investigating.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Colin Underdown says a ute with two people onboard crashed and rolled, smashing into a house on Glenn Terrace around 1am.

The driver was heavily trapped and died at the scene.

Colin says fire crews from Mount Maunganui and Tauranga had to cut the passenger free from the wreck.

Fire crews only left the scene at 6am.
