Morning Sunners, today's opening of the new Wairoa river season marks the only canoe slalom race on the river this summer, and the only local opportunity to see them splashing about.

The event is held at the slalom gorge, accessible a 200m up the hill from the SH29 Wairoa River bridge. Kayaking is from 11.30am to 3.30pm.

The passenger ships Dawn Princess and Maasdam are alongside at the Maunganui wharf today. Both are expected to sail this evening.
