Tauranga Motorcycle Club are holding their Christmas Moto Trial this Sunday, giving riders the opportunity to test their skills with a bike.

The event will take place at Roberts Farm in the Kaimais, beginning at 10am and finishing by 3pm.

Tauranga Motorcycle Club coordinator Francis Sydenham says the event will be made up of 10 or 12 challenging sections.

'A section involves riding over a series of obstacles such as rocks or logs or riverbeds,” he says.

'The rider must ride from the start to the end of the section without putting his feet on the ground. If your feet touch the ground, you lose points.”

The sections tend to take between one and two minutes to complete, with varying degrees of difficulty, which makes it harder for riders as they progress.

He says typically there would be between 20 and 35 riders for a Christmas trial, but anyone can sign up on the day. He expects riders from the Waikato and even Auckland could be coming down.

'People of any age can enter, as long as they can ride a motorbike. We have riders as young as eight years-old, while our oldest riders are in their late 60s/early 70s.”

Roberts Farm is by the last bridge on the way up the Kaimais, just before the summit. It will be signposted to show where the trial is happening.

Entry to the venue is free, and spectators are welcome – although as it is a working farm, people are asked to leave their dogs at home.

Francis encourages anyone interested to attend. For novices uneducated about moto trials, he suggests checking out moto trial ‘god' Toni Bou on YouTube.

'What [Toni] does is absolutely mind-blowing. He's the best in the world.”
