Coastland beat Lakeland in local derby

The two Bay of Plenty teams contesting the 2016 ND Primary tournament in Hamilton met in a Bay of Plenty derby on day three.

For the second year in a row, the Coastland side grabbed bragging rights after defeating their Lakeland counterparts by 49 runs.

Spencer Wills led the way with the bat for the Coastland team, top scoring with 46 runs, as his side posted a solid 184/9 in their forty overs. Toby Taylor (31) and Isaac White (26) also made solid contributions. Matt Veitch was the best of the Lakeland bowling attack returning 3/29, while Sam Lund and Montel Graham took two wickets apiece.

Harry Jones got the Lakeland reply of to a good start with 23 runs, with Viren Patel batting at five, top scoring with a solid 39. Three wickets for 11 runs by Dandre Du Plessis played a big part in the Lakeland team being restricted to 135/9, to hand the Coastland side a solid win. Ben Vyer also bowled well to finish with figures of 2/21.

It was a hard day at the office for the two Bay of Plenty teams at the ND Primary Cricket tournament on day two, though.

The match-up between Bay of Plenty Coastland and Hamilton saw the Waikato team bat first and post 162 for the loss of six wickets. Harrison Leach was the best of the Coastland bowlers taking two wickets for 13 runs.

Coastland opening batsmen Dandre Du Plessis got his team away to a grand start top scoring with 46 runs off 62 balls. The Bay of Plenty representatives were well in the hunt for victory, with Toby Taylor and Harrison Leach reaching the twenties. However the Hamilton bowlers upped the ante to bowl their opponents out for 143, to claim a relatively narrow 19 run win.

Bay of Plenty Lakeland also bowled first in their encounter with Waikato Valley. The team from the Waikato country districts were bowled out for 142, after some enthusiastic bowling from the Lakeland side. Angus Veitch took three wickets for 26 runs, while Vance Harvey, Dylan Tamariki and Ethan Forbes took two wickets apiece.

The Bay of Plenty batsmen simply failed to put any significant partnerships together and were removed for 109, to hand the Waikato side a solid win. Viren Patel was a shining light in his team's reply, top scoring with a hard fought 27 runs, however the next highest score of 12 told the tale of the lack of partnerships.

A win and a loss opened proceedings for the two Bay of Plenty teams on the opening day of the tournament.

Bay of Plenty Lakeland batted first against Counties Manukau and were bowled out for 85 in the 32nd over, with Ben Doogue the best of the Lakeland batting line-up top scoring with 15 runs.

While the Bay side were defending a relatively modest total, they bowled with genuine enthusiasm to have the opposition batsmen in some trouble. Angus and Matt Veitch along with Dylan Tamariki all bowled economically to take two wickets apiece, as Counties reached 87/6 to take out the game.

The Bay of Plenty Coastland team made a good start on day one, when they posted 170/6 in their forty overs against the Hamilton Invitation team. Batting at four, Isaac White top scored with 43 with Dandre Du Plessis batting down the order hitting a handy 39 runs. Opener Joe Smythe got his side away to a solid start with 31 runs.

While the Invitation side made a good start to their run chase, tight bowling restricted them to 141/8 after their allotted overs. Liam Collett took two wickets at a cost of just six runs with the rest of the wickets shared around.

Bay of Plenty Coastland can be pleased with their performances of winning two from three in the Hamilton tournament and four from five games in the annual competition. While Bay of Plenty Lakeland finished the competition with one victory, they were in contention for long periods in several of their encounters.
