Two kayakers are possibly missing off Hahei Beach near Mahurangi/Goat Island after they were last seen on Thursday evening.

Waikato Police and Whitianga Coastguard were notified of a man and a woman leaving Hahei Beach on a tandem, sit-on kayak, and were last seen offshore around sunset at about 6pm.

'They were thought to only have one paddle between them. Flashing lights were later seen offshore, in the direction of Mahurangi Island,” says a police.

'A search of the area by two coastguard crews, Westpac Rescue helicopter, and local police failed to locate anyone requiring assistance, and no-one has yet been reported overdue.”

Police would like to speak with anyone who was kayaking in the Hahei Beach area around 6pm last night, or anyone who saw the couple around that time, before or after.

At this stage police have suspended a possible search, pending further information coming to hand.
