Orca special for Manukau students

A pair of orca seen the harbour entrance this morning.

A group of Alfriston college students were rewarded for their 5am start today with the sight of orca in the Tauranga Harbour entrance.

The 20 or so college students from Manukau are on a day sail on the Hawaiki Voyaging Trust waka, Hinemoana.

The 22m double hulled Hinemoana was passing through the entrance about 9.30am when the orca were sighted.

'I think they may have cruised back up towards Coromandel,” says crew member Phil Lloyd.

After sighting the orca, the Alfriston students were taken out to Rabbit Island for a swim and an afternoon sail towards Karewa, before heading back to the harbour.

As well as day sails, Hawaiki Rising does eight day youth development voyages offering youth the opportunity to learn some of the Polynesian voyaging skills first-hand.

The next voyage is full, but there are still a few spots left on the pre-Christmas over 18 voyage, says Phil.

'It's proving very popular.”

The trust was established in late 20115 with 2016 being its first year of sailing operations.
