Roaming dogs killing sheep in Bellevue

Domestic sheep are being killed by dogs in Bellevue. File photo.

Tauranga City council animal control officers are seeking help from the public in locating dogs that have been killing sheep in Bellevue over recent weeks.

There have been three attacks on small mobs of sheep on two properties along Bellevue Road and Princess Road, leaving 28 sheep dead.

Tauranga City Council animal control officer Brent Lincoln thinks there's two dogs involved.

'Looking at the injuries and the number, I would say there's two dogs involved and obviously medium to large ones to do the damage they have.

'But beyond that, we have no sightings and no further information that gives us the lead.”

The first attack was Murray Davis' property in Bellevue Road down opposite Mitchell Park, where six sheep were killed.

The second was on Basil and Anne Graeme's mob in Princess Road overnight on November 18, where 14 sheep were killed. Read more here.

This was then followed by a second visit to Bellevue Road mob last Saturday when eight more sheep were killed by the dogs, leaving one survivor.

'They hit one property, hit the other and back to the first over a period of two weeks,” says Brent.

He suspects the dogs are from the Bellevue area and he wants to hear from anyone who has seen a pair of roaming dogs.

'If they can get a photo safely that would be great, or just report them to council.

'They can travel quite a distance, but I suspect from the commonality of where the attacks happened that they are from that general area.”

Both mobs are out of public view.

The Graemes have had sheep to keep the grass down on their property for 40 years.

The Davis mob lived in a gully east of Bellevue Road.

Brent doesn't know how many city residents keep sheep, they don't have to be registered with the council.

'There will be sheep scattered around the place.”

Find them - kill them! - Neighborhood should set up 24/7 mobile patrol - much like what would happen if this were 2 roaming lions! Scour the local streets until the killers are found. Then see if they are registered. If they are, KILL THE DOGS and fine the owner $1000 per sheep killed, PAYABLE NOW!

CHECK ALL DOGS IN AREA

Check dog owners in the area - though I guess they could be unregistered. Definitely need to reimburse the owners of the sheep and put the dogs down.

I totally agree Bryceh

There is no way the owner can't know what their dog is doing ... it/they must have the evidence on them blood etc. Also , I would be concerned to be walking a dog around that area (I certainly wouldn't). Kill the dogs! They obviously have the taste for it now - they are dangerous & need to go from my neighbourhood!

Are we going to wait.....

until these dogs kill a child, or a jogger? I think once dogs have acquired the taste for blood and killing, they will not stop. Why not ask the military to bring snipers in training, who can lay in wait and learn..... the dogs will be back for sure.... I think it would be fitting for them to be greeted by our snipers in training, would be a great and productive way of testing snipers equipment and technique, whilst helping the community. I agree, once the dogs owners are identified, the farmer should be reimbursed for his losses. If it were up to me, I would say put a bounty on the heads of roaming dogs
