Serious crash on Bay highway

UPDATED 6.10pm: NZTA are now reporting State Highway 33 is re-open.

4.30pm: Six people are being taken to hospital as a result of the crash.

A St John Ambulance spokesperson says two patients in a critical condition are being transported by rescue helicopter to Waikato Hospital.

One patient in a serious condition is being transported by ambulance to Rotorua Hospital, along with three other patients with minor to moderate injuries.

According to the NZTA, the highway is still closed.

EARLIER:

Police are warning of delays and possible road closures following a crash on State Highway 33 near the Okere Falls Store this afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Mike Membery at the District Command Centre in Rotorua advises the road will be closed at some stage while the fire service clears the scene where two vehicles have collided.

People are trapped in the wreckage which is blocking the highway.

Traffic from Tauranga is being stopped at Maniatutu Road.
