Car drives into café window

It's business as usual at the Café on The Strand today after someone drove into their windows.

But it's not the added stress proprietors Nicky and Malcolm George need after a car smashed into the kitchen window of their café about 5pm last evening.

'More than $5000 worth of damage, a couple of weeks to get it fixed and Christmas just round the corner,” says Nicky. Despite the setback. she had the café open as usual first thing this morning.

Nicky says the car was in an angle park right opposite the kitchen.

'The driver must have thought the car was in reverse and when they accelerated to get out of the park, it mounted the footpath, smashed into the window and then they took off.”

Nicky was told the driver and her associate were seen laughing after the accident.

A passerby captured the incident on his cellphone and the pictures which identified the car and the driver were passed to police.

It's understood the driver was 15-years-old and had her mother's car without permission.

The two broken café windows are boarded up this morning.

'It'll be a couple of weeks before we get things sorted,” says Nicky.

Danger to all

Putting aside the bad attitude and dishonesty, the biggest issue for me is how someone with no skill, no care and no maturity is allowed on our roads. It's an indictment of the New Zealand licensing regime and some people wonder why the road toll is so high. Take the keys away from her and she can try again when she is mature, honest and skilled, which may be never, in which case a robust licensing regime would expose and not grant her a licence.

Bit half-cocked there maildrop

I think you'll find that the minimum age for obtaining a learners license is 16, so this girl wasn't "allowed"to be on the road at all.
