There are exciting changes ahead for the Hotel Armitage and Conference Centre as it undergoes a transformation. Primeproperty Group bought the Tauranga landmark in April and Hotel Manager Gary Dickman is keen for the challenge of extensively refurbishing the 81-room hotel on the corner of Willow and Park streets.

'We are thrilled to be breathing new life into the hotel and expect the changes to be well received by our guests.

'Although improvements are already happening, the building work is planned to begin early next year.”

The hotel has been part of Tauranga's heritage for 45 years. 'I've been told it was the place to be then – and in the 1980s when one would have to book in really early to have a meal on a Friday or Saturday. You had to come all dressed up in your Sunday best.”

He says Tauranga residents have shared many positive stories about the hotel, which was originally known as Willow Park.

'Some Tauranga folk were married here or have held 21st birthday parties, or other functions here.

'One of the things we are trying to do is keep the grand ol' lady, but at the same time – modernise her.”

Part of the renovation will focus on enhancing the pool and outdoor area which Gary says is a fantastic place for guests to relax.

'The Poolside Restaurant has an exciting new menu and this summer the hotel will host a regular Sunday long lunch where the whole family can enjoy a fun day out.

'Christmas Day at The Hotel Armitage and Conference Centre promises to be a fantastic festive day with a traditional buffet lunch and free glass of bubbles on arrival.”

The hotel also boasts five function rooms to choose from to host conferences, weddings and special events. A range of Christmas function menus have been created to ensure a stress free Christmas party at affordable prices.

A new look website completes the upgrades to include accommodation specials and online bookings.

45 years and still the same decor. Leave it a bit longer and it will be fashionable again soon.

I worked there in the late 80's and 90's they have changed the carpets and the restaurant furniture, however I have to warn Gary that Friday nights in the kitchen were usually pretty slow. Saturdays could be busy, but never Fridays
