Law breaking bikers busted on camera

Two motorcyclists snapped overtaking dangerously on State Highway 29.

A couple of motorcyclists snapped dangerously overtaking on State Highway 29 have left one question in the mind of police – Why would you?

A passenger in a vehicle following two motorcyclists on Tuesday videoed them overtaking a truck with vehicles coming towards them.

The person who took the video says this was just one of several dangerous acts he had witnessed from the bike riders.

SunLive showed the video to Tauranga Police, who can't understand why anyone would risk their lives just to get one vehicle length ahead.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the riders of those motorcycles haven't complied with the law.

'So that's the first thing, which is that you are required to have 100m clear visibility throughout your entire overtaking manoeuvre.

'The second and most important thing is why you would risk your life or the lives of others just to get one vehicle ahead,” says Ian.

'It really is about everyone taking the required cared on our roads at all times, so that we call get to our destination safely.

'Acts like this really don't do anything for the motorcycling fraternity either, and it's simply dangerous.”

A good start to reduce impatience, save lives ...

A good start to reduce impatience, save lives ... would be to apply the same maximum speed limit to all highway road users. The present law restricting the modern coach, truck, motorhome to 90kph is a significant contributor to injuries and fatalities and driver impatience and emotions influence silly choices for passing. If these larger vehicles are not safe to travel at 100kph, then they are NOT save at 90kph. Additional overtaking / passing lanes would also reduce silly decisions.

Poor riding skills

Basically poor rising skills seen as "death or Glory" riding.First guy goes and tail end Charlie feels that he is beholden to catch up or he will look like a "Woos".Any Dick can buy a bike but it takes training and experience to reduce the risks and become a good rider, but for a lot of blokes the risk is the buzz. As a biker myself who as a very young kid watched a guy sitting on our doorstep sobbing like a child surrounded by a massive pool of blood with what was left of his hands (he later had both amputated) I just feel that there is a line between bravery and stupidity, the above is just stupid.

who do bike riders think they are, they are not about to grow wings and fly when it goes horribly wrong, instead they will be a big mess spread out on the road...................

Save from themselves?

What rot, Murray. Regardless of the rules, be they helpful or annoying, people make their own choices. If they choose to take early passage to heaven or hell, that's their choice. Problem is that many times it involves innocent people as well. I have driven buses, trucks and ridden motor cycles. Yes, there were times when speed limits etc were annoying but they were for a reason. I have seen extremely 'close shaves' and am thankful everyone survived. Remember - we all have the potential to be impatient. It's how we manage it that is the vital factor. And I bet that if the same speed limit applied to all vehicles, there would still be the mindless idiots taking the same risks!

Penguin, can your read? Got an idea worth sharing that might help.

Specifically which part is rot or is it that in anonymity you just don't give a damn? We have a duty to protect the innocent and the idiot from themselves, even the penguins. How would you suggest authorities impatience, a human trait few are exempt from? The same max highway speeds will NOT remove all accidents, take away all silly overtaking brought on my impatience, BUT they will reduce, and surely that's a better outcome than at present.

Rubbish Murray

Some idiots are just sheep and lemmings. Not enough brain cells to make sensible decisions so you want to accommodate them by spending billions on additional lanes for them?! Thank goodness you are not in power.

Struck a raw nerve did I thus giving rise to your vitriolic attack on my ability to read and my right to express an opinion? My point remains those who wish to depart this earth prematurely through idiotic decision making, will continue do so no matter what limits or guidelines are in place. And penguins certainly deserve to be protected!

No condoning this sort of behaviour - you have to ask why would you? I've had mbikes and this sort of behaviour deflects from those with a little more responsibility and common sense. Take it the person filming from the driving seat was also responsible -just saying

Recorded with his phone?

The way the camera moves around I'd suggest the driver of the car is using his phone to film the motorcyclists. It's definitely not mounted on the dash or mirror.I trust SunLive passed his details on to the police for them to have a quiet word? Editor's Note: The story states that the video was filmed by a passenger.

The second paragraph in the report begins with ..."a passenger in a vehicle following..." That should allay any concerns about safety!
