Following hot on the heels of the popular Western Bay of Plenty Mini World Cup is tomorrow's GoGirl Super Sixes tournament at the Bay Oval and Blake Park.

The competition is the annual finale of the NZ Cricket GoGirl programme, which was an initiative undertaken by Northern Districts Cricket four seasons ago and quickly picked up by Bay of Plenty Cricket.

Bay of Plenty Cricket GoGirl Coordinator Rebecca Yee has visited many Western Bay schools, introducing young girls to the basics of hitting, throwing and catching a ball.

The GoGirl Super Sixes is the culmination of Rebecca's term four school visits, where the youngsters can take part in fun games of cricket using the skills learnt during the GoGirl coordinator visits.

The GoGirl programmeme is the first step in Bay of Plenty Cricket's female player pathway, with the strategic aim being to build a strong junior playing base, offer innovative competitions for intermediate and secondary-school aged players, while also ensuring the best possible opportunities exist for those players who wish to progress to higher honours.

The Bay of Plenty GoGirl Programme has met the programme's strategies in spades. Bay of Plenty Cricket Manager Tai Bridgman-Raison says the aim of the programme is to give girls in Year Four to Six an opportunity to experience cricket, as well as develop fundamental movement skills of catching, throwing, hitting and bowling.

Wednesday's girls-only cricket festival has attracted 26 teams from Pahoia to Pongakawa, with the record entries making it the biggest school cricket festival run by Bay of Plenty Cricket.

The Super Sixes will be followed by the extremely popular Rainbow World Cup in March 2016, where the girl's team dress up in the colours of the rainbow to have a fun day of cricket in the Western Bay sun.
