Tamaki draws fire and brimstone

A sermon in which controversial pastor Brian Tamaki linked natural disasters to human sin has been met with a wave of condemnation, indignation, and a petition calling for Destiny Church’s tax free status to be stripped. Photo: Lawrence Smith / Fairfax NZ

There are calls for a church which has its roots in Rotorua to be stripped of its tax free status.

The petition against the Destiny Church is a backlash to Brian Tamaki's homophobic sermon blaming gays, sinners and murderers for earthquakes.

The sermon was delivered one day before the massive 7.8 earthquake which struck Kaikoura. killing two people, stranding thousands of others and causing billions of dollars of damage.

Along with stripping the church of its tax free status, the Change.org petition also seeks to reclassify Destiny as a 'hate group”. At the time of writing, the petition had gained 64,805 supporters.

The petition fired up after the self-appointed ‘Bishop' of Destiny Church told his congregation 'the earth convulses under the weight of certain human sin.”

Tamaki's comments drew an instant barrage of condemnation.

Newstalk radio host Rachel Smalley describes Tamaki's views as ‘bigoted' and makes him the greatest sinner of us all.

'He has the right to free speech,” believes Smalley. 'But there's a fine line between free speech and being an ill-informed, ignorant, bigoted ass.”

Speaking to Willie Jackson on RadioLive Thursday afternoon, Tamaki refused to apologise to anyone.

'I do plenty of good in the community and should not be judged as a monster.”

Since his sermon, Tamaki says he and his family have received death threats and threats to burn down Destiny Church.

He defends saying gays, sinners and murders are responsible for earthquakes, explaining he actually meant anybody indulging in illicit sexual behaviour, adultery, child abuse and more.

"It's about adultery, morality, it's about any type of extra-sexual behaviour."

He believes it is important for people to remember this is 'God's view”, not his.

Jackson's co-host, Ali Mau who is in a same-sex relationship and has stated publicly that she is bisexual, took issue with Tamaki in the studio prior to the interview. In a tweet she called Tamaki a fool and walked out when he tried to say hello to her.

Human Rights Commissioner Richard Tankersley says Tamaki's "frankly disgusting" comments are both ignorant and ironic, given Wednesday was UN International Day for Tolerance.

"Mr Tamaki's words are a lesson to us all that intolerance and prejudice is very real. When families are mourning loved ones and many more are scared and wondering how to face the next day, this kind of message is frankly, disgusting.”

Richard is encouraging New Zealanders to continue to 'look to our earthquake scientists and our civil defence experts for guidance, rather than putting their trust in Mr Tamaki's sermons.”

The Prime Minister calls Tamaki's suggestion ‘ridiculous', saying 'you always get people coming out with these stupid statements”.

'And Tamaki is the moral and spiritual guardian for his flock?” questions a gay man in a message to SunLive.

'If Tamaki wasn't so pathetic he would be alarming. And I know that I am a much better man than him.”

While another message to SunLive describes Tamaki's sermon as 'potentially very dangerous”

'He is surrounded by ill-educated people who would not question his indoctrination and absorb all the hate.”

SunLive has sought comment from the Tauranga branch of Destiny Church and is waiting on a response.

Classic case of repressed Bi-sexuality and self-loathing because of it!

I think he deserves a knighthood, the comments are a little out there but really even the bible states that it is not natural. The Satanist acts are disgusting so certainly the world would be better off with the types Tamaki has noted. Who can argue that point? As for "earth shaking" that part maybe a little far fetched, but the Bible does talk of fire and brimstone and more, go read revelations.

and the scary thing is that his followers believe him. taking all their money while living the high life and travelling around the world first class and living in luxury while his people live in poverty

In good old New Zealand if you have the courage and conviction to stand up and say what you really believe, if it does not line up with political correctness, you will be torn to shreds, mocked and ostracised. Brian is not ill informed, ignorant or bigoted. He is a bible believing Christian and therefore not politically correct. This is bound to make people angry because the bible is always correcting us to lead us away from sinful behaviour of which we are all guilty to one degree or another. Most people will not acknowledge that. They will say that if that is what the bible says and if that is being a christian I don't want any part of it. Their choice. Don't shoot the messenger. Where are other Christian leaders? Conspicuous by their silence.

No pity from me, when he swans off on luxury holidays, his wife buys luxury cars, all off the back of the most vulnerable and naive.

Tamaki would have been kept for a few weeks entertainment, than feed to the lions. People like him have always existed, what I don't understand is why anyone takes him seriously and gives him money.

Who does this man think he is? It is not for him to judge others but for God and God alone to pass judgement. To many people take the word of the Bible as a right to usurp the rights of others.

... a society locked in to Mediaeval superstitions and prejudices. Brian Tamaki is just a symptom. The only reason anyone would be offended by his comments is because his comments are perceived to "matter". Would you be offended if a dog barked at gays? (OK, you might curb it, but you wouldn't consider its opinion to be important...) We have a society where people are free to follow their personal belief systems (provided they do no harm to others) and Tamaki's delusions are only empowered by people making a big deal out of them. I won't be joining the petition (but I won't be attending Destiny Church either) and I'm not homophobic or prejudiced against any specific categorization. I look for the day when people can take personal responsibility for their words and actions and not blame everything on some, probably imaginary, "higher power

Perhaps you should have a read of the bible, besides enlightenment you may learn the answer to why he has said what he has said. The bible has been around for some 2000 years, to survive that long must be for good reason, like makes sense, obvious, logical and indeed a sound quality basis for life. Simply disagreeing with a part of it (on false self interest basis, or lefty nutter weirdo crazy beliefs) simply means you fail to realise the errors of your ways and beliefs. The great thing about the homo lot is that they wont breed and so will die out. The bible and beliefs will win out in the end regardless.

All very well for everyone here but..

I am not religious or anti anyone but the question that must be asked before anyone criticizes this guy or gets all indignant about the subject is this. Can anyone prove that his belief is actually wrong? The only time any of us will know the true answer is when we leave this place.

While I don't agree - it is refreshing to find someone who is totally un-PC ! I bet there are a lot of people out there who follow the same lines of thought as Tamaki but would never 'come out' and admit it!As for me, I go along with 'Crash test dummies' statement "The great thing about the homo lot is that they won't breed and so will die out."

That is true, "There can only be one ...".However on this earth we have the situation where some of those who lust for money attend church every Sunday and profess to believe in God also. It is indeed ironic and extremely at odds with scripture you can not have both but many profess to. The issue seems to be that one of true faith should merely have that which is needed to sustain life and so do away with unnecessary additional material items, money and so on. This does not mean that one is poor but perhaps more of a sustainable situation. Some seem to have a view that a massive pile of money is "essential". Generally a lot of this is mystifying.
