A comedy and staged reading are coming to 16th Ave Theatre this month.

‘One Man, Two Guvnors' was made famous by James Corden in the starring role of the socially naïve and very ravenous Francis Henshall, who is employed by two men, one a local gangster and the other an upper class criminal.

He's desperate to keep the two men from meeting and the ensuing chaos becomes further entangled by the gangster being a woman in disguise looking for the killer of her brother who is none other than the criminal. Wrap an elopement into this as well as rope in members of the audience and the hilarity index rises further.

The play, by Richard Bean, is an English adaption of a 1743 comedy by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni. The modern version replaces the Italian period setting with Brighton in 1963. It premiered in 2011 at the National Theatre's Lyttelton Theatre and went on to the West End and Broadway where James Corden won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.

Widely acclaimed by critics as being a triumph of visual and verbal comedy, One Man, Two Guvnors runs from November 23 to December 10 at 16th Ave Theatre and is also significant in that it marks 80 years of the theatre staging productions. 16th Ave Theatre is the longest continually running amateur theatre in New Zealand.

Give Am Dram a go!

When I was a child my parents were right into amateur dramatics and as kids we used to sit on the side line and watch them rehearse. I have been to a few shows at the hall and they are very enjoyable. I wish them luck with this show and anything by James Cordon has to be good. Think of Gavin and Stacey on TV a while ago also written by him.
