Rotorua will host a record 57 teams at the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Sevens at Rotorua International Stadium this Friday and Saturday.

The tournament will be one of the biggest qualification tournaments in the country for the 2016 Condor Sevens.

The development and growth of sevens rugby within the Bay of Plenty has seen the tournament expand across two days. There will be an abundance of rugby action across the day with the inclusion of both Under 14 and Under 15 boys' grades in addition to the Under 16 grade.

The prominent development of women's rugby in the Bay of Plenty is reflected in the inclusion of an Under 15 girls' and Under 19 Development grade.

Under 19 boys and girls teams will battle it out on day two in their bid to qualify for the Condor Sevens held in Auckland in early December. It will be a great day out for family and friends packed with fast running and flowing rugby to keep all entertained.

Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Manager Ian Parata says he is excited for the next two days.

'It is great to be able to host such high calibre teams in the Bay of Plenty and have other school from outside the Bay keen to participate.”

This year St John's and Palmerston North Boys Under 19 teams have been given special invites to attend along with Feilding High School's Champion Under 19 Girls team coached by Richard Jones.

'We know a weekend of sevens rugby creates a buzz in the schools and we look forward to seeing secondary school sevens rugby continue to grow as it has done thus far,” says Ian.

The Bay of Plenty Secondary School's 7's Tournament takes place at Rotorua International Stadium on Friday and Saturday, October 28-29, from 9am daily.
