The countdown is on to Waihi's Code Red Emergency Services Family Fun Day this Saturday.

The public is invited to come along to the free family-friendly day of emergency service demonstrations and displays at Morgan Park in Waihi, from 10am to 2pm.

Code Red is an opportunity for families to talk one on one with experienced emergency services staff and get up close to their vehicles and equipment.

Police, fire service, ambulance services, mines rescue, coast guard, surf lifeguards, LandSar, Civil Defence, and other services will be on hand demonstrating skills.

A Jaws of Life display, police dog demonstration, kitchen fire display and more exciting exhibits will be on show during the day.

Kids of all ages will get the chance to wade through walls of bubbles and find out what role they play in emergencies.

GO Waihi coordinator Brian Gentil says the event was first conceived between his organisation and the police.

'We thought, wouldn't it be great to get all the first responders and emergency services together? We wrote down a list, which got bigger, and now we've got about nine altogether. It's an opportunity for people to see these services closes up, in a non-emergency situation.”

He says many people will recall such events happening when they were kids.

'I remember having these things when I was younger, when kids got to see the fire engine, try the fireman's hat on, and use the siren.,” says Brian.

'Times have changed, though. There are computers in fire engines now – they don't just squirt water.”

Go Waihi's Code Red Emergency Services Family Fun Day takes place at Morgan Park in Waihi on Saturday, October 29, from 10am to 2pm. For more information visit: www.waihi.org.nz
