Despite the recent wild weather, summer is definitely coming, and with it barbecues and the hot, dry weather that increases the chances of fire.

The Fire Service has some simple tips and advice for people to reduce the fire risk this summer.

Fire risk management officer for Bay of Plenty Coast Luke Burgess recommends checking out the barbecue first and foremost.

'The old barbecues have probably been sitting around all winter, so checking the hoses and regulators and making sure your gas cylinders have no leaks is important.”

Luke recommends using the soapy water test to find any gas leaks.

'Mix one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with one cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray the contents around the regulator and connection of the gas and check for bubbles. If bubbles form, obviously you've got gas leaking.”

People should also remember that we are now in the restricted fire season.

'You will need a permit from the Rural Fire Officer to have an outdoor fire on your property,” says Luke.

In regards to the fire risk, although the district has experienced a large amount of rain in the past few weeks, people should not become complacent.

'When it starts getting hot and dry, the growth we've experienced will become a real fire danger in some areas. So people should definitely be aware of that.
