Good morning Sunners, welcome to Saturday and the first day of Labour Weekend.

The MetService forecasts fine spells with the odd shower and southerly winds today, so make the most of your day and enjoy the raft of events taking place like Latin dancing as part of the Bay Salsa Festival, or high-octane entertainment at Baypark Family Speedway.

The 10th annual Bay Salsa Festival is taking place at various locations across Tauranga this Labour Weekend and features dance classes, parties and performances of Latin dance.

The Festival aims to raise funds to help teams and couples travelling overseas to represent New Zealand on the world salsa stage.

Festival organiser and co-founder of Bay Salsa Dean Christie says the festival is a great opportunity for people to try something new.

'The Bay Salsa Festival is a fun, inviting event where people who have never danced before can come and learn and be part of a great weekend,” says Dean.

'And if you are not quite ready to jump on the dance floor yet, then coming to the showcase on Saturday night will not only reveal what Latin dancing can be like, but also give you a great night out. There are also two parties and a ball that you can attend to feel the vibe and practice dancing.”

While Baypark Family Speedway's racing season kicks off with the opening night of the Champion of Champions Sprint Car Series, from 6.30pm.

Tonight will see the North Islands best super saloons, saloons, stock cars, mini stocks and six-shooter V6 wingless sprint cars battle it out in Round One of the six round series.

Event promoter Bernie Gillon says tonight's event is just the tip of the iceberg of what's going to be a great season ahead.

'It's opening night…which is always a pretty good night. It's going to be an action-packed season, with four big events planned during the Christmas and New Year period.”

These are only two of a number of events taking place in and around Tauranga today, for more events see below.

And finally, let us all take a moment to give our thanks to Samuel Parnell – the Wellington carpenter who's considered to be the founder of the eight-hour working day.
