Local sailors miss Youth Worlds

We've gotten used to seeing Tauranga sailors on the podiums at the Olympics and the world championships of the competing classes, but there won't be any Tauranga sailors competing at the youth worlds at Auckland in December.

Ten of the 13 strong team announced this week are from the Murrays Bay Yacht Club in Auckland. The under 19 year olds are competing in the skiffs; the 29er and 420, a multihull and the lasers and wind surfers.

But Commodore of the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club, Nick Wrinch isn't bothered by the lack of Tauranga entries in this worlds. It's an age groups thing, and some of their young sailors aren't racing in the right boats.

'We knew when it was announced a few months back that we probably wouldn't. it's just the way the ages of our guys are at the moment and the boats they are sailing and everything like that.

'We just don't have those people this time round. It might be different in a year's time, it's quite a narrow window of opportunity.”

Youth Worlds sailors have to be the right age and they have to win the youth trials. There's only one boat selected per class, so there cannot be a deluge of entries from the host country.

'Some years that's just how it works out. Nothing to be too surprised about we knew that would be the case this year. Next year it would all be totally different.

'We don't sail all those classes out of Tauranga either, which is just part of being a provincial club rather than the larger clubs in Auckland.”

Tauranga sails Laser and Laser radials, and there are some promising sailors coming through who may be contenders in a year or two. The club also sails the more traditional classes the P Class and Starling. The 29er junior skiff class is becoming increasingly popular and the club may see if there's interest.

'But they have got to want to compete,” says Nick. 'It's got to come from them, and the parents.”

With the Youth Worlds being sailed in New Zealand this year it would have been nice to have Tauranga represented, but it's not to be, says Nick.

The 2016 Aon Youth World Sailing Championships run from 14 December to 20 December in Torbay, Auckland.

The prestigious international event sees national teams from around the world gather together for a week long regatta for youth class sailors under-19 years of age. New Zealand will be represented in eight of the nine events being contested in 2016.

Ten of the team represent the Murrays Bay Sailing Club on Auckland's north shore, but sailors hailing from the Wellington region also feature in the line-up. They range in age from 13 to 18 years old, and for five of the sailors this will be their second time representing New Zealand at the World Sailing Youth World Championships.

'I am very excited about the raw talent we have in this year's NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team,” says Yachting New Zealand's Talent Development Manager Ian Neely.

'We have a nice mixture this year of returning medallists from last year and young sailors attending their first World Sailing Youth Worlds”

'The World Sailing Youth World Championships provides its own unique set of challenges, and the event is regarded by many as a youth version of the Olympic Games with the limited entries, and high pressure racing.

'This year we will be racing on home turf which is an amazing opportunity and extremely exciting to invite the world's best to come and sail and race with us. The team organising the World Sailing Youth Worlds look to be doing an amazing job and I am sure it will be an event to remember”

'Between now and December we will be putting in the work to be as best prepared as we can. It's all about doing everything possible now, to arrive at the regatta knowing we are well prepared and ready for action.”

Plenty of the world's best known yachtsmen and women have competed and medalled at the World Sailing Youth World Championships which date back to 1971.

Among the list of New Zealanders to have stood on the World Sailing Youth Worlds podium are Tauranga sailor Sam Meech (2008 Bronze, Laser Radial), Alex Maloney (2010 Silver, 29er), Jo Aleh (2004 Silver, Laser Radial), Sir Russell Coutts (1979 Silver, Laser and 1981 Gold, Laser), Blair Tuke (2007 Silver, 29er), Dean Barker (1990 Gold, Laser and 1991 Silver, Laser) and Stuart Bannatyne (1989 Gold, Laser).

The World Sailing run event is coming to New Zealand for the first time in its 47-year history and as a consequence the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team will have the opportunity to compete against the best youth sailors in the World in their own home waters.
