The fickle Western Bay of Plenty weather saw just one Baywide Cup game completed last Saturday.

Eves Realty Greerton batted first in their match-up with Carrus Mount Maunganui, which had the Baker Cup (WBOPCA Challenge Trophy) on the line.

The introduction of Mount skipper Dale Swan into the bowling attack paid immediate dividends, with the spin bowler taking four wickets for just 6 runs, as Greerton were removed for 72. Fellow slow bowler Nick Smith was also in good touch taking three wickets.

Northern Knights fast bowler Brett Hampton removed both Mount openers without a run being scored in his first over, in a rain delayed start to the Mount Maunganui reply. Black Cap batsman Dean Brownlie, in a rare appearance for Mount Maunganui, took his team home to a six wicket win with a gritty 42 not out.

The New World Te Puke versus Bayleys Central Indians was a battle against the weather. The match was eventually abandoned in the second innings. Te Puke posted 168/9 in a game where players left the field on several occasions. Skipper Stephen Crossan top scored 64 with Prem Gill taking three wickets for the Rotorua visitors.

Central Indians reply came to an end at 58 for the loss of one wicket when rain won the battle of the elements on the day, with the match unable to be completed.

Element IMF Cadets and Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College pulled the pin mid-afternoon at Waipuna Park. Persistent drizzle saw the match abandoned without a ball being bowled. The rain affected round has seen Mount Maunganui take a narrow lead in the first past the post Baywide premier competition.
