Police offer their sympathies to the family and friends of the Tauranga man who was killed in a two-truck crash near Pongakawa on Thursday.

Martin John Ferry, 30, died when his truck and trailer unit collided into the rear of an unladden logging truck at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Ponkgakawa Station Road at 10.30am.

'Police offer their sympathies to the friends and family of Mr Ferry at this tragic time.

'Police would also like to thank the members of the public who assisted at the scene of the crash and drivers for their patience when using the road diversions.”

Police's investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.

A reporter at the scene who spoke to police on Thursday says it appeared the logging truck had been waiting to turn right into Pongakawa Station Road when the truck and trailer unit slammed into its rear.

Following the crash SH2 was closed for most of the day and was only reopened at about 6pm.

The horrific fatal crash was one of several crashes which police attend on Thursday.
