Protecting & preserving a unique culture

In the October 7 edition of The Weekend Sun I noticed a large advertisement by a group that call themselves Hobson's Pledge, who seek to have NZ defined into one group of people.

These people are advertising for our society to remove the rights of Maori, with the ignorant assumption this group of people don't want, need or deserve these rights.

I'm assuming the Hobson's Pledge supporters think Maori are in a ‘priviledged position' because of these rights despite the myriad of statistics proving otherwise.

I'd like to ask - since when is it okay to place an ad in a community newspaper advertising such a thing? Since when, do we as a society, accept it is okay to campaign for the removal of rights for an entire race of people?

This ad blantantly asks for financial donations to help them spread their message – and let's be clear, when you are campaigning to remove the rights of a race of people, its hate speech.

This ad may have slipped through the cracks of the advertising standards under the guise of 'freedom of opinion” but nonetheless, this sort of perspective is hate speech to its nasty, bitter core.

Consider for a moment another group advertising to remove the rights of another large group – for example, Muslims campaigning for the removal of the rights of Christians, women campaigning for the removal of rights of men, Maori campaigning for the removal of rights for Indians.

If you take the time to apply the concept to any other group its easily seen as not just racist or prejudice but idiotic and appalling. This country is not defined by one race, group, sex or culture. It's a melting pot of everything and it works and we are internationally known as a peaceful, safe country.

Indeed, I happen to know a man from Israel in business with a man from Iran. Have a guess how often that happens globally?

The Treaty of Waitangi wasn't created to irritate white people. It was created to protect and preserve a unique culture, a way of life and human rights and like all human endeavours it has had its flaws and failures but it is a work in progress.

Rights are something we all enjoy but it appears we are developing into a society that thinks it's okay to not apply them equally to all - and Don Brash and his team of financially well-off, privileged, middle-aged, white people are the epitome of this horrible behaviour.

When we, as a society accept this sort of campaign, or accept other hate speech - such as anti-muslim rhetoric - we begin to go down a path, one we have been down before and one that ended in genocide. I, for one learnt from the mistakes of the past and you won't catch me waving the flag of ignorant hatred. You might however, find me demanding the privileged start paying their fair share of taxes though.

This is the MOST SENSIBLE LETTER I have seen on this subject yet.....I would actually like Sunlive to respond to your question.

race based privilege only to be removed

Posted on 25-10-2016 18:53 | By Captain Sensible

They are not trying to remove the rights of maori....just the extra race based "rights" that are denied to all other kiwis on the basis of race/skin colour. Unsure if you have ever heard of 'equality' or 'democracy' but has to do with these, otherwise we have a racist apartheid system where maori are the elite and the rest of us are second class....or is that just the way you like it? I suspect you enjoy your racist privilege and will fight to keep the racist status quo. Shame on all who think maori deserve better privileges and rights than other kiwis. Funny how that was not OK for South Africa for a minority to have race based privilege but OK in NZ!!!!!

Hobsons Pledge

Quite right Captain Sensible !! I don't think K Moselen read the Hobsons Pledge Manifesto before commenting. There is absolutely nothing racist at all about their aim to ensure everyone in this country has equal rights , be they brown, white or brindle, tribes, politicians , judges , teachers, millionaires or new migrants. Every law enacted by Parliament should reflect this without exception and contrary laws repealed. Every person can enjoy their Culture as they wish without interference.

really?

I wonder if K Moselen has any idea what maori culture was pre Captain Cook? I assume he/she is aware that the Treaty signing, overnight, banned canibalism, slavery, murder, infanticide, inequality for women etc...or would he/she prefer to live with these magnificent cultural gems that are slowly being written out of the history books in our great history rewrite?

At your worst

So called Captain Sensible: this last comment by you is you at your very worst. You don't know New Zealand history and never will. You don't understand the Treaty and never will. You don't understand Maori and never will. You are a denier that won't participate in any rational discussion because when you have to face up to things, you simply move the goal posts on to something else. You will go to your grave in your lonely little world while fortunately the rest of New Zealand is increasingly not sharing your attitudes.

ahem waxing

I don't understand your post except that it is abusing Captain Sensible. You have not provided a cogent rebuttal to his statements which I thought fairly reflected what the treaty was about ?

Like Nelson Mandela, I also refuse to accept my second class status. The Treaty gave equality yet it has been manipulated after all the signatories are dead ( how cowardly is that?!) to give maori special race based privileges and rights that give the middle finger salute to democracy. Please show me where it says in the Treaty that maori have special race based rights/privileges or where the examples of maori culture I gave are not real.....otherwise it would appear that it is you, not me, that lacks the knowledge you accuse me of lacking! I look forward to seeing what you have!

Captain Sensible Lands Estates Forest Fisheries

Posted on 01-11-2016 13:43 | By Peter Dey

The Treaty of Waitangi guarantees to Maori possession of their Lands Estates Forests Fisheries and other properties as long as they wish to retain possession. Maori have not given up possession of rivers which are both fisheries and properties. The Government knows this which is why it is providing co-governance. People who are not in Government can talk hot air about what the Government should do but they would not be able to do what they say if they were in Government. Politicians who are honest know that the Treaty of Waitangi should be honoured. Saying let's ignore fairness to Maori because they can't do anything about it does not wash with fair politicians.

mahunga.tutae Hobson's Pledge is full of racism

Posted on 01-11-2016 13:56 | By Peter Dey

Hobson's Pledge group belittles the Maori verse of the National anthem. They belittle Maori religious beliefs. They belittle Maori custom on the marae. They belittle those who have negotiated Treaty settlements and they provide no evidence in support. They belittle the Waitangi Tribunal without providing any evidence for their claims. They wish to remove Maori language and culture from mainstream activities. They belittle pre-European Maori civilization with half-truth. The only rational explanation for all this is that they believe Maori language and culture to be inferior.

deny and then justify!!

Posted on 01-11-2016 14:05 | By Captain Sensible

Hobson's Pledge have provided plenty of evidence of race based privilege...Peter Dey denies it exists....but then tries to justify it!!!!

Captain Sensible Stick to the point

Posted on 01-11-2016 14:59 | By Peter Dey

Captain Sensible you asked where in the Treaty of Waitangi were Maori granted race based privileges. The answer is that the Treaty granted Maori possession of their Fisheries and property as long as they wanted to keep them. They have not given up their possession of their rivers, which are fisheries and property. British law allows people to own rivers and it did when the Treaty was signed. The evidence of race based privilege provided by the Hobson's Pledge Group is full of half truth which we can deal with one issue at a time.

Treaty gave equality

Posted on 01-11-2016 19:10 | By Captain Sensible

You just don't get it do you....any privilege based on race, legal or otherwise, has no place in a democracy. The Treaty gave equality to all. Maori have the right to own land as do all Kiwis. Privilege handed out on ones ancestory or part ancestory is absurd and racist.

Democracy is government by the will of the people

Posted on 02-11-2016 10:20 | By Peter Dey

The Hobson Group claim that separate Maori Parliamentary seats are not democratic is nonsense. Google "democracy" and see that there are many forms of democracy. The key point about democracy is that a democratic government can be changed regularly by voters if they are dissatisfied. Modern democracies all round the world now recognise that Indigenous minorities should be recognised and supported. Our Government has signed the UN Declaration on the Rights if Indigenous Peoples. As K.Moselen points out Maori culture is a unique culture which should be protected and preserved. Democracy does not mean pushing everybody into a mono-culture which is what the Hobson Group is proposing. Helping Maori culture to survive is fairness not favouritism

deny, deny, deny and then try to justify

Posted on 02-11-2016 11:07 | By Captain Sensible

Peter, WHY should anyone, on the basis of their ancestors, have special race based rights? There you go again....denying race based privilege exists....and then trying to justify it on the basis of an ancestor allegedly being here before somebody else's ancestor!!!! Equality for all Kiwis, for some reason, is an abhorrent concept to you!
