State Highway 2 at Pongakawa is expected to be closed for several hours as police investigate a fatal truck crash.

A truck and trailer unit and a logging truck collided on the highway, near Wharere Road, just after 10.30am.

A reporter at the scene who spoke with police says it appears an unladden logging truck was waiting to turn right into Pongakawa Station Road, when the truck and trailer unit slammed into the back of the logging truck.

'The debris from the two trucks has then clipped a red ute.

'Police have confirmed that the driver from the truck and trailer unit died at the scene and two other people have been injured.”

The highway is expected to remain closed for several hours as specialist body recovery teams have been called in.

Diversions are in place.

The serious crash unit and the commercial investigation unit are at the scene, along with several other police officers.

Te Puke and Maketu Fire Brigades were also called to the scene. Te Puke have since returned to the station and Maketu remains at the scene.
