Cherrywood loses United Video

After 15 years serving the community, United Video Cherrywood is closing its doors.

On Monday it will begin selling its stock, before closing down completely by November 14.

United Video Cherrywood owner Carey Gordon says unfortunately it's no longer viable to keep running his business there.

'The video industry has been in decline for years, especially with Netflix and Lightbox becoming popular.”

It's fair to say this the end of an era for Carey.

He's been in the industry for 29 years, first at United Video Cameron Road, then at Cherrywood.

'The hardest part is having seen all the kids grow up here, and not being a part of that anymore,” he says.

'We've had parents say they're going to miss coming in with their kids to pick out movies.”

Another employee, who does not wish to be named, says shop closures such as theirs are never good for the community.

'It's not good for anybody's little town to be falling apart,” she laments.

The closure of this United Video means the nearest video store for Cherrywood residents is in Bethlehem, while the nearest United Video will now be in Fraser Cove.

The news follows the closure of two Cherrywood bank branches in recent months.

Wow....United Video Cheerywood closing, what a disaster. A bank closed there recently as well. Cheerywood will become a ghost town. Unbelievable.

One of the main reasons I ever went here was the customer service, many many visits with the kids choosing videos, late nights popcorn, Bloody Cheers and thanks for the great memories...
