Failed robbery accused in court

Police arrested one of the youths following an attempted armed robbery of AJs Lotto on Devonport Road.

The two teenagers facing charges in relation to the attempted armed robbery of AJ's Lotto shop in Devonport Road made an appearance in court on Monday.

The 13-year-old and 14-year-old face charges of assault with intent to rob using knives following the attempted armed robbery on Thursday, September 29.

A member of the public was stabbed by one of the teenage offenders who attempted to rob AJs Lotto in the Tauranga CBD, police told SunLive after the incident.

A police spokesperson confirmed the two offenders threatened the shop owner with weapons and were captured by two members of the public after they fled the Devonport Road store at about 1pm.

'Police arrived on the scene to find the offenders being restrained on the ground.

'We understand it was one of the good Samaritans who received minor injuries.”

The man received a minor stab wound and was taken to Tauranga Hospital for treatment.

During their appearance in the Tauranga Youth Court yesterday, the pair did not deny the charges and were remanded on bail. They have been ordered to attend a family group conference on November 7.

Due to their ages and rules surrounding youth court reporting, SunLive is not able to name the youths involved in the case.

As predicted by most commentators earlier, they are to attend a Family Group Hug (I mean conference) - big deal! These lowlifes need to be made aware of the impact they have had on law abiding members of our community (the shop owners, the good Samaritan who got stabbed etc), how about setting up a couple of sets of stocks on the Strand, chuck them in there for 6 hours every day for a couple of days, let public shame and humiliation help them see the error of their ways.
