Brownless takes Tauranga

The preliminary results for the 2016 Local Body Elections are in.

The progress results show Greg Brownless is currently leading the mayoralty votes with 8513 received. He is followed by Kelvin Clout with 6562.

A total of 11 candidates are contesting the mayoralty seat.

Kelvin Clout (16,146 votes), Gail McIntosh (13,204 votes), Max Mason (12,511 votes) and Rick Curach (10,752 votes) are leading the votes for councillors at large, with Tony Christiansen only a few votes behind (10,593 votes).

It's looking likely that Steve Morris (6933 votes) and Leanne Brown (6752 votes) are well ahead in the Mount Maunganui-Papamoa ward.

Larry Baldock (4265 votes) and Catherine Stewart (4096 votes) are ahead in votes for the Otumoetai-Pyes Pa ward, but Bev Edlin could tip that yet with 4034 votes.

Bill Grainger (4016 votes) and Terry Molloy (2994 votes) are clearly ahead in the Te Papa-Welcome Bay ward.

The results are based on the counting of about 98 per cent of the returned voting papers. The progress results do not include the voting papers returned by residents who made their votes today, or the bulk of special votes. Voting returns into ballot boxes this morning are still in transit to the processing centre.

The outcome of this year's elections may change once all voting papers have been counted.

The electoral officer will be counting remaining ordinary voting papers overnight and tomorrow. A further set of results will be made available late afternoon on Sunday, October 9.

Final results, including all special votes, are expected on Thursday, October 13.

Preliminary results for Western Bay of Plenty District Council are available here.

The voter return was 36.03 per cent, being 32,657 votes, excluding votes in transit to the processing centre and special votes.

Kelvin Clout, who has been deputy mayor of Tauranga for the last three years, congratulated Greg Brownless from his home this afternoon.

"First of all I want to say congratulations to Greg Brownless. It's a little bit bitter sweet because obviously I would have liked to become mayor, but I'm very pleased that i was the top polling counsellor at large.

"I look forward to working with Greg and continuing to work with the council and support our wonderful growing city."

First order of business - please reconsider the closed door decision to stop New Years organised entertainment. This event changed NY for the good after the 2010 riots , have we forgotten all the benefits for families , visitors , locals and youth in our rush to shut it down ?

Congratulations Greg

It is great to see a refreshing new face at the helm. Unfortunately yours is only one vote at the table when I think most ratepayers were hoping for more of a 'clean sweep'of those with the big wish list that the ratepayers can't afford. We trust you will not be 'bought' by the developers who seem to hold sway over the city and its environs. Best of luck Greg - stay strong in your values!

Oh Well

I think first thing would to be stop the silly steps they are going to put on the water front, although these are a nice to have not essential and should be put on the back burner with all other no essential items concentrate on running the city not putting in not needed steps on the water front or putting on concerts, leave the concerts to the promoters.get back to basics and try to reduce or at least cap the rates we cant afford any more increases

Three years ago a group of residents were concerned with their new valuations. A meeting was convened on 23.12.12 with low attendance expectations on that date. Turnout exceeded expectations, and Rick Curach joined us, being the only one of all Councillors/Mayor invited. Just 4 replied, one had a valid reason not to attend, and the rest of them? Rick not only put in time and effort pre meeting/ afterwards, but further helped by talking to people in council/ elsewhere which was of great help to residents. Rick may not be seen taking a photo opp very often, but he certainly can be relied on to roll his sleeves up and do some real work, which even included helping to replace tables/chairs appropriately after the meeting, and again at the next meeting held the following month. Some talk, and some walk the talk. Actions speak louder than words.

Let's start with revitalising Tga city.Get rid of the parking meters, they stop people coming to town.Make all new builds supply footprint sized car parking for that building underground,Stop the stupid ideas of cramping up the strand car park. Not needed, not wanted and overpriced. If people keep going to the suberbs to shop Tga. Central will die. Time to listen!
