A small controlled explosion has been carried out on a suspicious item on the corner of Quay St and Gore St in Auckland yesterday evening.

Police cordoned off the area and closed parts of nearby roads as a precaution.

NZDF was called in to inspect the item, which was a small suitcase beside a rubbish bin.

Police are still working at the scene and will carry out further investigations.

Motorists in the area should expect to continue to experience some disruption.

Police would like to thank drivers, pedestrians and retailers for their patience.
