Coromandel rain warning lifted

While the rain will continue to fall today, the good news is the MetService has lifted its heavy rain warning for the Coromandel.

A moist easterly flow is expected to continue to bring rain to the Coromandel today, with possibly another 20 or 25mm accumulating in a few localised areas until midnight, however the heavy rain has mostly eased.

But with the deluge of rain this week, the ground is pretty saturated, so further rain may cause surface flooding in some areas, says the Thames-Coromandel District Council.

'Please also watch out for rising river levels with the high tides.”

High tide in Thames is at 7.47pm and is expected to reach 3.7m, while on the other side of the peninsula, the high tide will hit Whitianga at 7.44m and expected to reach 2m.

According to the New Zealand Transport Agency website, all state highways in the Coromandel are open but a couple of warnings are in place.

On the Thames Coast Road, stop/go traffic management is in place on about 500m north of Tararu due to slips.

While In Wilson Bay, stop/go traffic management is also in place due to road works taking place on a section of Manaia Road, starting from most northern end of Thames Coast Road.

There is also a slip in the southbound lane of State Highway 25 near Totara, as well as a slip on the southbound lane of the Hikuai Settlement Road near the intersection with SH25.

The rain has also eased in the Bay of Plenty, and while further rain can be expected today, the MetService does not expect any significant accumulations and has also lifted its heavy rain watch for the region.
