Special circus workshops at Bayfair

When you're young and spoilt for choice when it comes to options, it can be difficult to make a decision.

But for children with special needs, when the school holiday's roll around finding fun and suitable activities can present a different challenge - so Bayfair and Circus in a Flash want to change this.

On Friday the shopping centre is hosting special workshops for children with a variety of special needs and sensory processing disorders, which are being delivered by professional circus trainer and Circus in a Flash co-founder Rowan Dawson.

The fun tricks and activities Rowan will teach during the workshops includes how to juggle using rings and balls, the delicate art of spinning plates, and how to master the Chinese Yo-Yo.

The first of the special workshops kick off at 8.30am and is designed specifically for children with sensory disorders.

'This class is for kids who find loud noises, bright lights and crowds of people just a wee bit too much, so it's taking place before most of the shops are open,” explains Rowan.

Along with the sensory training classes, there will be extra support circus training for families of children with a variety of special needs, such as physical disabilities, Asperger's, or down syndrome.

The classes run between 20-30 minute and take place from 10.30am to 12pm, and then again from 1pm to 2.30pm.

'As it's an assisted class we ask parents and caregivers join in, get hands on and help their kids with the classes.”

Rowan, who originally hails from Auckland but has recently moved to Tauranga, has been teaching circus for the past 10 years, and run these special workshops for the past six.

The thing he loves the most about these sensory and extra support circus training workshops is seeing the cool and different variations children come up when learning the various tricks.

'It can be really inspiring. They may have limited abilities but they're in there giving it a go and creating their own style to suit their own abilities. You'll teach them one way of doing a trick, and if they can't do it that way, they'll find their own method of performing it.

'Sometimes I'll see kids doing tricks their own way and think ‘why didn't I think of that!' and I've got some really cool tricks now that were created that way.”

Rowan says he can cater to up to 15 children at a time so if your little ones are keen then bookings will be essential and can be done by either calling Bayfair's customer service team on 575-9349 or by emailing customerservice@ampbayfair.co.nz
