Tauranga unfazed by the 'Big Debate'

It's the biggest show in town with an audience twenty five times the population in New Zealand …and a thousand times the population of Tauranga.

It was the most hotly anticipated showdown in modern political history …not just in the USA but the world.

Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton starting with a handshake and then proceeding to slug it out on the first of the televised presidential debates.

It might have pulled a TV audience of 100 million in the USA but on The Strand here in Tauranga the pub TV's stayed on sport.

Golf, golf chat on one Sky channel, but the big chat to find the next most powerful person in the world went unheard.

Why aren't you inside watching SunLive asked some lunchgoers outside one pub. 'Watching what?” The debate. 'What debate?”

The bar keep in another hostelry is bewildered, rolls her eyes and throws her arms in the air.

'No-one's asked to change the channel. What are they meant to be watching?”

No she didn't know the presidential debate was on but she have a broad Irish accent.

It's a clash eighteen months in the making, a 90 minute tv stoush which its suggested could be turning point in the race for the White House.

Hopefully there will be greater interest in the upcoming domestic local body elections.

It made great viewing. Entertaining - very little detail given to support Trump's vision of making America great again.Hillary did well - detail backing up her promises. Trump 's assertions that she had been a politician for 30 yearsand nothing had changed had to be shot down as she has never been president before.

I reckon most americans
