Rain with a few heavy falls is expected to continue today and through Wednesday, while further rain reaching warning levels could strike on Thursday.

'A moist easterly flow is expected to continue over the North Island until Thursday, with rain likely to continue in the northeast from the Coromandel Peninsula to Hawkes Bay.

'This rain could be significant, especially in areas where ground conditions are already saturated.”

On the roads, the Thames-Coromandel District Council says it has not received any reports of road closures on the peninsula.

However, stop/go traffic management is in place on State Highway 25 near Wilson bay due to a slip caused by the heavy rains.

But with high tide occurring at about 5pm, the council is asking locals to take when using roads in low-lying coastal areas, as some are prone to flooding when the tide combines with heavy rain.

'Be careful driving, watch for slips, be careful of water on roads, watch for rapidly rising waters, avoid waterways and stock up on drinking water and food to last a few days just in case.”

The MetService will issue a severe weather warning whenever there is an expectation that any of the following weather conditions will occur within the next 24 hours:

  • Widespread rainfall greater than 50 mm within 6 hours or 100 mm within 24 hours;
  • Widespread severe gales with a minimum mean speed of 90 km/hr or frequent gusts exceeding 110 km/hr.

‘Widespread' is defined as area that is 1000 km2 or more.

MetService will review the current severe weather watch that's in place at 9pm on Tuesday night.
