The drivers of a Toyota Hiace van and a Honda car were injured when one of the vehicles crossed the centreline resulting in a head-on crash at the weekend.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the crash happened on SH2, 400m from Apata Station Road, at about 6pm on Saturday.

Ian says the Toyota was heading north to Katikati and the Honda was travelling south to Tauranga at the time of the crash.

'Both drivers are still in Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries.

'The investigation is in its infancy and the serious crash analysts are conducting an investigation as well.”

The crash closed the highway for three hours.
