Friend disappears without a word

A 19-year-old man who stepped outside at a function at the Whitianga fire station on Saturday night is still missing.

Police are asking residents to check their properties and any outside buildings for Lucas Cochrane.

He had been with a group of mates in the Coromandel supporting a friend who had lost his father.

The group were staying at a rented bach in Whitianga for the Saturday night event - a remembrance service for a local firefighter's family member.

Lucas is described as European, 182cm tall and of medium build with short sandy coloured hair.

When he was last seen, he was wearing a black t-shirt, dark blue jeans, black peaked cap and white Nike shoes with red and blue on them, says a statement from police.

'The Aucklander was not equipped or dressed to be out in the open in the heavy rain overnight.

He was last seen just before midnight.

'Police co-ordinating the search have been told his disappearance is completely out of character.”

One of Lucas' friends posted the following message of WhitiChiChat on Facebook:

'Hey everyone, I am friends with the missing boy Luke Cochrane and we just received a tip from someone and any help would be appreciated.

'A psychic has contacted us saying he is on a windy, hilly country road with a broken collarbone lying in a ditch,” reads the post.

'Believe that if you want but it's all we've got. If you are driving in or out of Whitianga tonight can you please keep an eye out! Don't have any help right now so we've only got the one car looking and we can only cover so much. Currently looking on the road between Whitianga and Matarangi.”

Police once again request that locals check their sections, properties and any garages or outside buildings for Lucas.

Anyone who has information about Lucas' whereabouts is asked to contact police immediately on 111.
