Help shape ACC levy levels

The Accident Compensation Corporation has made the move to review and propose new levy rates for a two-year period instead of every year.

ACC is now calling on Kiwis to share their thoughts and ideas about levy settings for the 2017-19 period, as part of a public consultation process which opened this week and closes October 19.

ACC belongs to every New Zealander and the levy consultation process provides everyone with an opportunity to tell the Government's workplace accident insurance company what they think, says Board chair Dame Paula Rebstock.

'This feedback is important as it helps us to form our proposals as well as challenge our thinking on levies.

'There will be changes to some levies in the coming year and ACC is working to ensure levies are fair, to help its customers understand the levy-setting process, the part it plays and the value they receive in return.”

While ACC will be making every effort to reduce levies where possible, as more Kiwis benefit from the support it provides they will continue to experience increases in medical and compensation costs, says Dame Paula.

'ACC has also achieved healthy investment returns over the last few years, which reduces the total levies we need to collect. For two of the three levies, this means we'll see a reduction.”

Levy proposals for the coming year includes a 10 per cent reduction in the work levy along with major changes to workplace safety incentive programmes, as well as a 3 per cent increase to the earners' levy due to an increase in claims costs.

A proposal to reduce the petrol levy by 13 per cent and the registration levy by an average of 13 per cent for car owners is also on the table, and while motorcyclists would also benefit from the 13 per cent petrol level reduction, there's no plans to change the current motorcycle safety levies.

ACC is encourages everyone to make a submission on any aspect of the levy structures in any of the categories to provide their insight into where the corporation should focus its future efforts, says Dame Paula.

'In 2015 ACC introduced the online platform Shape your ACCto host conversations with its customers. This proved to be a very successful forum for people to make their submissions, see other people's ideas and comments.

'We encourage people to take advantage of this opportunity to submit and discuss their ideas. We will be listening.”

Public consultation on ACC's levy settings for the 2017-19 period closes Wednesday, October 19. To make a submission visit www.shapeyouracc.co.nz
