Rubbish spilled on Oropi Road

A rubbish truck has caused a bit of a stink in Greerton after it accidentally spilled trash along a section of Oropi Road.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says it looks like truck's loading hopper has opened while it travelled up the hill towards the Niederer Roundabout sometime before 11.30am.

'There's a whole heap of rubbish blocking one lane and it's covering a section probably about 100m long,” says Andy Dickson who alerted SunLive to the spill this morning.

'It's all domestic rubbish, the stuff they collect from the side of the road.”

When asked if the rubbish smelled, Andy replies: 'I wouldn't know, I definitely wasn't keen to roll my window down for a sniff.”

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says they are aware of the rubbish spill and staff have been dispatched to the scene.

'The rubbish has been pushed to the side of the road and it is no longer blocking the lane or creating any major delays. Early indications suggest a mechanical fault is to blame.”
