About 900 secondary school students have explored the opportunities available at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic as part of the institution’s annual open day.

The students came from Bay of Plenty schools, and from some as far away as Opotiki, Kawerau, Coromandel, Hauraki Plains, Thames, Putaruru and Hamilton.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Windermere campus was busy as about 900 school students attended its open day.

As well as attending information sessions about courses and scholarships available through both the polytechnic and the University of Waikato, the students were entertained by radio stations The Edge, MoreFM and BOP FM, as well as by Steamers rugby players, the ANZ Rugby World Cup team, Singstar and X-Box.

The polytechnic’s music production and performance students Vaughan Tindall, Luke Tyrrell, Nic Ririnui and Natalia McDonald kept the music pumping throughout the lunch break with their own blend of original hits and popular covers.

Hairdressing students showed their style in a ‘hair up’ competition, while all got their fill of the free pancakes and sausages on offer.

Polytechnic marketing manager Maggie Hope says Thursday’s event was the biggest they’d had to date.

“All of our programme information sessions were incredibly busy with many overflowing with students,” says Maggie.

“Particularly popular were programmes in sport and recreation, marine studies and tourism and travel.”

Students who attended sessions had the opportunity to go in the draw for a Flip Mino HD video, won by Katikati College student Mike Pierce.

Winner of the design a T-shirt competition, in conjunction with Please tees, was Hami Walker from Edgecumbe College.
