Seafood industry grows

A $200 million increase in profit over one year show the New Zealand seafood industry is showing steady growth.

Export earnings reached $1.78 billion in the year to June, an increase of $201 million on the same time last year - ”further demonstrating that we continue to make a significant contribution to the economy as one of the country's main export earners,” says Seafood New Zealand's executive chairman George Clement.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the fisheries Quota Management System (QMS).

'Last year industry accepted the Government's aspirational goal of doubling export revenues by 2025 and we are on the growth path to achieve this.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the fisheries Quota Management System (QMS), a fisheries system George says was world leading when it was established, and continues to stand the test of time.

Prudent stewardship of New Zealand's fisheries, underpinned by sound science are the cornerstones of the Quota Management System, says George.

'The Ministry for Primary Industries has decades of peer-reviewed science that show steady and increasing levels of abundance in each of our main fish stocks.

'But this isn't about resting on our laurels, while celebrating our success, we are very focused on the future and are constantly bringing in new improvements including trawl harvesting techniques, scientific assessments and innovative technology.”

A major announcement later today at the conference by one of the country's largest fishing companies will demonstrate the confidence industry has in the future of New Zealand fisheries, says George.

Export growth and profit is at the expense of recreational fishers. At least they can put everyone on equal size limits.

Rape and pillage to send seafood to the demanding Asian appetite. I for one do not believe MPI.

Could not agree with you more! All at the average Kiwis expense. Those companies were given a free share of a resource owned by all New Zealanders. QMS has been a disaster for the ordinary kiwi. Since the QMS (1986) the recreational snapper quota has gone from 30 to 7. Wont vote National again until they return the SNA quota taken off us recently (back to 10 SNA) to give to their mates in industry. Same size limits should apply definitely. I believe there should be a full inquiry into who was on the set up committee for the QMS, who has benefited from it, and who has missed out! And maybe if there has been collusion or straight out fraud the benefactors made to financially reimburse the public.
