Bay’s top apprentices compete for title

It will be a sudden change from building Bay houses to building playhouses for the region's top carpentry apprentice chosen this Friday.

The regional awards ceremony for the nationwide Registered Master Builders competition will determine who heads to Auckland in November for the national competition.

Last year's Bay of Plenty Central Plateau Apprentice of the Year placegetters: second place Joshua Benjamin, first place Jamie Russell, third place Liam Stjernqvist.

The winning apprentice from the Bay of Plenty will then compete against winners from nine other regions for the national title of Registered Master Builders Carters 2016 Apprentice of the Year in Auckland.

They will be interviewed by the judging panel, before competing with each other to build playhouses which will be donated to local schools.

As well as the sought-after title, the apprentices will compete for a share of over $10,000 in prizes.

Over 160 apprentices nationwide have entered the competition, with 11 from the Bay of Plenty.

This reflects the high level of construction activity happening around the country, says Registered Master Builders Chief Executive David Kelly.

'It's brilliant to see so many apprentices step up to the challenge.

'These future Master Builders are our next industry leaders, this competition is all about nurturing talent to ensure a better built New Zealand.”

The awards ceremony for the Bay of Plenty apprentices will be held at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club on Friday at 5.30pm.
