Earthquakes hit near White Island

A trio of earthquakes have been recorded in the Bay of Plenty this afternoon.

The first quake, which is being described as unnoticeable by GeoNet, was recorded 40km north-east of Te Kaha.


Three earthquakes have been recorded near White Island this afternoon.

It struck around 1.40pm, was 47km deep and registered 2.2 on the Richter scale.

The second quake, which hit 5km west of White Island, was slightly stronger.

It hit around 2.30pm, was 5km deep and had a magnitude of 2.8.

GeoNet reports a third quake struck around 2.34pm and was centred 5km south-west of White Island.

It had a magnitude of 2.1 and was 5km deep.
