Tairua wharf works start 2017

The $1.4million rebuild of the Tairua Wharf at Mary's Beach in the Coromandel and a new boat launching pontoon will begin in the first quarter of 2017, says the Thames-Coromandel District Council.

The work includes widening and improving the existing boat ramp to help with launching at low tide, plus two additional 30-metre floating pontoons to help boat launching at all tides.

Tairua-Pauanui area manager Garry Towler says two consents needed from the Waikato Regional and Thames-Coromandel councils (earthworks and building) have recently come through.

'The tender's awarded, but a decision was made with the contractor to start the build early next year rather than straight away to avoid any risk to the project not being completed in time for 2016-17 peak summer period,” explains Garry,

Since 1995 there's been a number of schemes designed by the boating communities to create a destination facility at the Tairua Wharf and Boat Ramp at Mary's Beach.

In May 2015, a business case to improve the Tairua Mary Beach Wharf and Boat Ramp was approved by the Tairua-Pauanui Community Board, following consultation with communities and input from a Stakeholders Working Group.

Garry says council is extremely pleased to see this project now getting off the ground with work booked in for next year.
