Lovebirds on Mount Main Beach

A feathery couple of oystercatchers on Mount Main Beach have come back this year to ‘get it on'.

For the past two years the two oystercatchers, affectionately named Harry and Sophie, nested and raised their babies on the beach, and have returned this year for the same reason.

The couple made their nest in the middle of Mount Main Beach in summer 2014, which quickly became an issue as New Year's Eve approached along with a few thousand beach visitors, so a protective fence was erected for the birds.

Last year, Harry and Sophie raised three chicks safely on the beach.

Rosalie Crawford, who runs a Facebook page for the birds, says they're hoping to do the same this year.

'They're back, very lovey-dovey and we want to keep them safe from now until February while they nest and raise their chicks.”

Cate Duff saw the birds on the beach and has been out taking photos to document the bird's stay this year.

She shared the photos with Rosalie and now the two run the Facebook page together.

Rosalie made the Facebook page to help people stay educated and up-to-date with the famous birds, but says it's a delicate balance between information and keeping the pair safe.

'I noticed they'd returned recently, are currently mating and will be establishing a new nest again soon, so I was thinking if we could help make people aware that they are around, hopefully people will take care while on the beach.

'It's very likely they'll find a hollow in the sand to put their next lot of eggs,” says Rosalie.

'It's always a tricky balance with raising awareness about our local wildlife - you want people to know so they'll take care, but you don't want them crashing through the bird's home wrecking it in order to get pics. Our wildlife is at risk from humans, dogs, cats, stoats and rats.”
